How to build a good boat for "Sink or Float" activity?
My younger brother in 2nd grade, is a wreck " or Float "activity / event to which we must build a 6" x 6 "boat (basically a structure that can float, not need formed or have one) and small tiles will be placed in it, with the boat that can hold more than be the winner. Does anyone know what kind structure and materials would best support so much weight? Some restrictions are that you can not use pre-made materials (such as jug of milk, or Tupperware) and must be 6 "x 6" size, or that do not fall into the bucket. We built a small raft out of straw wrapped in a sheet of tin which worked quite well, and tried to use tubes of toilet paper to a model "pontoon" flotation device, but it was tempered. All ideas are welcome. Thank you.
I've done this before using aluminum foil only. It would be a bit harder because you have to do 6 "x6", but I think it's possible. Stationary Aluminum is sturdy, but lightweight and very flexible. The winner of my rectangle class event that has been built to high margins in this way, even when the boat was reduced by weight (parts for use instead of tables) techincally collapse not because it took on water. The hardest part of bending / Ensure the corners so that is inches of water, but it is not possible, my science class all shown with 5 of 6 models that are waterproof and can contain objects. Perhaps you could even use clear tape packing tape (in fact it is very hard) to wrap corners. This should be kept out of the water, but added OT weight of the boat. Good luck!
